It has been nearly a month since we did our last trigpoints. We have been to the Lake District for a few days but the main reason is that I have suffered with ‘man flu’ and it has really taken all my energy.
We woke up this morning and decided that we would visit a few trigs that were going to be fairly easy. I have a map on my office wall and there are 8 groups of trigpoints circled and that covers 25 with 6 odd ones dotted around the far reaches of Shropshire. We thought we would do 3 just south of Shifnal.
Tuesday 9th November
Trigpoint #65 – Lodge Hill.
We left home just after 11:00 and reached Shifnal and the starting point of our short walk to Lodge Hill about an hour later. We left the car at the side of a quiet road and walked along a nearby track. The weather was warm with light cloud and the trees are turning golden and starting to fall. It was lovely.
We crossed a stream and continued along the track and up some steps cut into the hill. At the top of the steps we could see a copse of trees on the hill and that was where we were heading. The trigpoint was supposed to be at the side of the copse. The way to the trees was barred bay a barbed wire fence which we walked along looking for a gateway. Sure enough there was a gate but it was locked so we climbed over this into a field containing sheep.
We walked across the field making sure that we didn’t disturb the sheep too much. We reached the trees and the trigpoint was easily spotted. The views were great so out came Triggy and we took the standard photos of the trigpoint and surrounding countryside. We then headed back the way we came, climbing over the gate and then down the hill and back to the car.
Trigpoint #66 – Grindle Farm.
We headed away from Lodge Hill and along the A4169. A short distance down this road we turned left along towards Kemberton and then Grindle. The roads were very quiet so we parked the car at the entrance to a field. The trigpoint was not very far from there. According to the map it was at the top of the next field.
We entered that field which had recently been ploughed. I really don’t like waking in these fields as the soil gets caked on our boots and we end up with very heavy feet!
There was nothing for it though so along the edge of the field we plodded. We disturbed some young birds in the hedgerow as we went, I think they were grouse. It’s amazing what you see on these walks.
At the top of the field there was another group of trees and an area that could not be cultivated. The trigpoint was situated in this area and looked very uncared for. There were nettles and brambles that I had to clear before I could get the trigpoint details.
I took my photos and then we headed back down the field to the car. We sat beside the car and had our lunch then headed on to the last trigpoint of the day.
Trigpoint #67 – Whiston Hall.
We left Grindle Farm and headed East through Ryton till we reached a road junction. The trigpoint was situated in a hedge at this junction. We parked the car a little way along the road and walked back to the trigpoint.
This was a really sad trigpoint. It was overgrown by gorse and we had to climb up a small bank to get to it. The traffic was passing quite quickly so we had to be careful how we climbed up and down. The views were quite uninspiring so we took what pictures we could then went back to car and headed home. One of the 8 groups done today.
